***5 Stars***
Hooo weeeā¦
Talk about whiplash.
I figured that there would be tension, angst, a good dose of miscommunication combined with them having conversations with themselves in their heads, but Tess and Donal took it to another levelā¦and I was kind of here for it, even though my eyes do hurt a bit from all the rolling theyāve done.
But as much as Tess and Donal made my eyes hurt, I found that I got them. I understood that when they set a goal for themselves, thatās all they see and become blinded to everything else, even when itās important to them. So, watching as they make the effort to not only get along with each other, but open themselves up to the world around them more was a lot of fun to experience. But through it all, it was quite apparent that they had a connection and Iām happy with how everything worked out between them.

Excerpt
āIām just nervous.ā Admitting that to Donal took a lot of effort. āOpening up to people isnāt exactly my strong suit, and Iām taking my insecurity out on you.ā
He surprised me by pulling me into a hug.
Wow. The man really knew how to give a hug. I wasnāt generally a big hugger, but just like the other night when heād held me in his arms, I didnāt hate it.
In fact, it felt amazing. A few more hugs like this, and Iād be a dedicated convert to the holy sacrament of hugging. Iād be going door to door proselytizing on the spiritual benefits of embracing physical embraces.
āI promise Iām on your side.ā Donalās voice was low and rough, his breath a warm caress against my hair. āIām not going to say or do anything to damage your relationship with Erin. Youāve got to trust me on that.ā
It was difficult to talk with my heart lodged in my throat and my face pressed against his astonishingly firm chest. āI want that for you too. Iāll try to be a better teammate.ā
He pulled back to look at me, and my stomach did another one of those unsettling flips under his up-close scrutiny. āWeāre really bad at this, arenāt we?ā
I was so flustered, I thought he was making fun of my poor hugging skills and stiffened. āIāwhat?ā
āBeing friends.ā
Oh. There went my heart, right into my throat again. āIs that what we are?ā
āIād sure like us to be.ā His eyebrows notched up a few millimeters. āWouldnāt you?ā
Damn the man for being so likable. How was I supposed to protect myself when he kept being all vulnerable and appealing?
And handsome. Donāt forget the handsome.
Shit, did I really want to be friends with Donal Larkin again?
Yes.
Even with our poor track record, I wanted that. Maybe it could be different this time. We were both mature adults now. Surely we could handle it. We wouldnāt make the same mistakes.
āIād like that too.ā I sounded out of breath, like Iād just done a hill ride on the stationary bike.
āGood.ā Donalās shoulders sagged in relief. āCan we go sit down and eat now? Because I was too nervous to eat much at lunch, and Iām seriously hangry.ā
