Where does one start with this book?
With the twisted, broken, obsessed and borderline psychotic mind of Ivy herself?
With the fact that almost none of the characters that populate it are actually likeable? Almost.
Or with the fact that the journey, though twisted, was a fascinating look into just how far people will go to get what they want?
It’s an honest to god crap shoot, and as this is just the first part of Ivy’s story I’ll keep this simple. This book fascinated the observer of humanity in me. The extreme lengths that Ivy went through in order to obtain her ‘true love’ were truly epic and watching how that one deception affected each person she came in contact with was what kept me turning the pages. I needed to see how each person would react and then act. It was a chaos theory at it’s finest.
While I can’t say that I truly liked any of the characters,, because they were all pretty horrible in their own ways, I understood how Ivy’s delusions could take her over. I could see how what she had gone through as a child and into her teens could make her go sideways. And though Ivy isn’t always a likeable character, she could be seen as a sympathetic one based on her neurosis. As for the rest of them? There was only one character that appeared to be less self absorbed and self serving than the others and that was Jared, that may change in the next book since, but for now he’s the most likeable of them all.
The Evolution of Ivy: Poison is a journey. It’s a romance in the sense that there is love involved, though it’s been twisted by obsession and filled with characters that aren’t necessarily likeable, but quite fascinating because of it. The book ended on something of a cliffhanger, though the most pressing issue was resolved, and with a nice little twist, so I’m looking forward to seeing where Ms. Campbell tin tends to take Ivy in the next installment!

Lauren Campbell lives in Atlanta, GA, with her family, and is author of The Evolution of Ivy: Poison.
She was raised in Columbia, SC, with her three sisters who annoy her greatly.
An avid reader since early childhood, Lauren discovered her love for writing several years into owning a successful newborn photography business. After reaching out to author Colleen Hoover in 2013 for advice, Lauren painstakingly pieced together a heap of garbage loosely based on her personal life that she decided to trash. After one year of being on hiatus, Lauren subsequently came up with the idea for Poison after being inspired by a photo on the internet. She wrote Poison in three weeks. It is not a heap of garbage, has no personal ties, and is filled with characters Lauren cares more for than some of the real people in her life. But don’t tell anyone that.
Lauren’s social life is pretty boring, but she loves reading, coffee & hot tea, and living in her pajamas. She’s a glutton for punishment, and regrettably signs up for things like Room Mom in her children’s classes, leaving her up all night doing things like baking dozens of cookies between swear words. Her favorite food is avocado. If she could, she’d find a way to put it on everything.
