I really enjoyed Releasing the Demons and couldn’t wait to see what the author had in store for us in Black Bullet and I wasn’t disappointed, in fact I found that I enjoyed Jon and Lawan’s story even more. It was was a slow building romance but absolutely satisfying as these two damaged souls worked through their own demons and found solace and redemption in each other.
I already liked Jon, aka JJ, after meeting him in the first book, but my heart broke for him as he constantly fought the monster(s) inside him and the emotional rollercoaster he was constantly on because of it. But despite the beatings he was taking, he continued to be that honorable, protective guy who wanted to make the world a better place in any way he could.
Lawan is a fighter. What she has lived through is nothing less than horrific and soul crushing, and though she may not be coping with it all in the best way possible, she hasn’t given up. She is out there doing what she was created to do and despite believing that her heart is dead, there were quite a few instances that showed it was still alive and well.
I thoroughly enjoyed the slow build/burn of Jon and Lawan’s relationship because it made perfect sense that it these two wouldn’t just jump each others bones right away due to their own personal demons. I liked how the trust between them was built and how Jon’s perseverance, and sneakiness, ended up winning Lawan over.
After finishing Releasing the Demons I had a few questions about the Hybrids that hadn’t been touched on at all and was very happy to get a couple of them answered in this book. While not all were answered, and I do have a couple more add on now, the ones that were helped to give them more depth. I liked the pacing of the book and actually felt as if the flow was much smoother than in the first book as if the author was settling more into her style and voice. I loved experiencing the camaraderie between the members of the Senary and getting more insight into each of their personalities. I’m definitely intrigued by Shaul and cannot wait for his book, but my favorite supporting character was Oscar and I hope see more of him as the series progresses.

Fledgling vampire Jonathan Kerr has just met his match.
Not even his past life as a former Marine and FBI agent could prepare him for the battle against the monster inside him, struggling to take hold. After an old nemesis of the Senary surfaces in Brooklyn, unleashing chaos and terror in the battered borough, Jon sets out to take him down. Instead, he ends up with far more than he bargained for when he clashes with the beautiful half-vampire hybrid, Lawan Knight.
After escaping near death and suffering unspeakable horror at the hands of vampires, Lawan trusts no one, regardless of species. In between bouts of drunken stupor, her only goal is to exterminate all those who've wronged her, including every member of Jon's vampire bloodline. But Jon's soulful eyes and quick smile crawls under her skin, transforming her black and white world into a hazy shade of gray.
As the days rapidly grow darker, Jon and Lawan turn to one another, but their inner demons threaten to tear them apart. The only way either of them will survive is if they overcome their greatest fear--
Love.
