***4 ‘Things That Make Me Happy’ Stars***
Until It Fades is my first foray into the mind of K.A. Tucker (though I have a few of her books sitting in my TBR list) and didn’t know what to expect going in. I was prepared for drama, the description sets the tone perfectly, but I didn’t expect the roller coaster reactions ~ both good and bad ~ not only to the drama, but the very eclectic cast of characters that brought this story to life. It was sweet, smexy, funny and frustrasting (sometimes all at once) and I got caught up in Cath and Brett’s journey as they find that single moment can change the course of your life forever.
Cath’s past has never stopped haunting her and though she lives with the consequences of the choices she made when she was young and dumb, she is determined to ensure that her daughter’s present and future are bright and filled with love. I really liked Cath, even when I wanted to reach out and shake some sense into her. She’s a fighter and would do anything for her daughter, but when her stubborn pride kicks in, it tends to get in the way and has her making certain decisions that end up backfiring on her. Thankfully, with much prodding and manipulation, she does end up seeing that her may not be the best way and will own up to it without out too much fuss.
Brett is the golden boy of hockey and the you want to hate because on paper he has it all -Looks, talent and fame - And yet you can’t because at his core he is a good, hard working man doing what he loves. It really was hard to not fall in love with Brett, because he is the epitome of a good man with his feet firmly planted on the ground, or on ice with ice skates, and appreciates all that he’s been given. He does have a bit of an alpha streak and is quite determined, and even a little sneaky at times, but it just makes you want more of him.
The journey that Brett and Cath took to get to their HEA was bumpy, but given Cath’s past and Brett’s current situation, it wasn’t surprising the hurdles that they both had to get over to start to see the silver lining to the horrific situation that brought them into each others orbits. There was insta-attraction, once they meet physically, but I enjoyed the slow but steady, and a little frustrating, was their relationship evolved, with a little help from outside sources. It was all kinds of sweet, smexy and yet quite realistic which made their journey relatable and relevant in this day and age.
As I said in the beginning this is my first book by K.A. Tucker and I really enjoyed it. I loved how, even in the crazy that was going on, she kept things simple. The issues that are brought up throughout the book are handled realistically and make you question what your reaction would be if faced with them. I’m a huge fan of well written secondary characters and there are a plethora of them in this book and my, at times extreme. reactions to them prove that the author craft some quite unique characters to give the story more depth, Brenna was adorably precocious, I loved Lou and I have a little crush and Richard, but all of the characters will keep you on your toes. This book will bring out quite a few, and varied emotional reactions, but the journey is definitely worth it.
