***4.5 ‘Liberation’ Stars***
I have to come clean and say that after I read the synopsis I was a bit hesitant to dive into Wicked Envy because the love triangle trope isn’t one of my favorites, but seeing that it was Sawyer Bennett at the helm I really had no choice but to give it a go fangirl that I am, and I’m very thankful that I didn’t allow my...issues with that particular trope hold sway because Wicked Envy was so much more. It is about three people, three best friends, working out their feelings towards each other in what could be the sexiest panty melting way possible, but it’s also about the bonds of friends, figuring out just who you are and finding the strength to liberate yourself of the chains you’ve placed on yourself in order to find your own happiness.
I really enjoyed getting to know Dane, Avril and Andrew and watching as not only their friendship evolved, but as they did as well. Dane, for all that he is closed off when it comes to any sort of emotional connection beyond friendship, is quite open minded, and adventurous, when it comes to his most base desires. Andrew is laid back, has no difficulty giving emotional comfort when needed and tends to view his most intimate relationships more with his heart than his head. Avril is comfortable in her own skin when it comes to her intelligence and work ethic but is less sure of herself when it comes to her own sexuality and what being a woman means to her. All three have huge hearts and care about each other at the deepest level, so it’s difficult for me to pick who I liked the most, but I will say that I loved watching Avril evolve and become truly comfortable in her own skin.
As for their journey from being friends to more. It was HOT, like don’t even bother with panties HOT. Not that I doubted that it would be because this IS Sawyer Bennett, but it was so much more.Their deep and long time friendships made it more than just the three of them taking their relationships to the more physically intimate level. It had them examining what they really meant to each other and what they wanted for themselves and from each other in the end whether it be a more platonic relationship or one that went deeper. I found the process that each of them went through quite fascinating as to how they each looked at how a relationship, in any form, should be and the decisions they came to in the end. The main issue that loomed over their heads was one that wasn’t a surprise, but there were enough twists and turns to make the build up to it well worth it. And as to where they all end up? Let’s just say it all worked out the way it was supposed to.
Wicked Envy was a great read that I am very happy I didn’t pass up. It was well written and paced and I loved being in the heads of all the main players throughout the book. As this is a Wicked Horse novel, it is all kinds of kinky, smexy hot goodness so be prepared for an eyebrow raise or two and lots of panty melting going on. This can be read as a standalone since the characters don’t have any strong connections with the previous couples outside of The Wicked Horse, though they are mentioned in the book. I really liked the epilogue, which was perfect for Dane, Avril and Andrew, and am curious about what the future holds there, but I’m all kinds of excited for Wicked Choice and crossing my toes that it will be about a certain smexy as all get out Brit!
