Lennon Carter first saw my face with his hand around my throat.
Shock widened his eyes, starbursts of anger for what I'd done. That moment should have been the last of us; our beginning and end. Fate, it seems, had other plans.
A dedicated musician, Lennon would become my mentor, my shadow, my protector and nightmare.
We were two discordant notes that somehow blended with perfect harmony.
Challenged to become a pianist as talented as him, I became Lennon's SIN, while he became my DISCIPLINE.

“Who are you, Amelia Dillon?”
Confusion flooded me. “What?”
It bothered me how my question came out more as a startled squeak than a word.
He grinned, just the corner of his lips curling with lazy satisfaction. Reaching out with his free hand, he trapped my chin between his fingers, holding my gaze to his without concern that I hadn’t invited the touch. Electricity sparked where his skin met mine, my head dizzy, my breath as uneven as my heartbeat.
“Who are you?”
My heart was in my throat, beating staccato so hard that I swore I was a few seconds from passing out. “I don’t-“
The gentle tone of his voice was at odds with his question. “Are you the shitty little thief hiding in a hoodie and baggy jeans? Or are you a musician who demands respect based on her talent and discipline?”
He was enjoying this moment far too much, the truth of his amusement written in the line of his lips, the sleepy look in his blue eyes. It only frightened me more.
“I’m a musician,” I whispered.
Mr. Carter leaned forward and I panicked, my eyes locked to his lips. He shouldn’t have been this close to me. There had to be rules against this. He didn’t seem to care.
I wasn’t a girl to be pushed around or controlled. Yet, in his presence, I stilled in place, unable to find the willpower to fight or move away.
Breath hot against my cheek, he whispered, “I don’t think you are. I think a musician would know better than to risk her hands acting like a stupid hoodrat that robs people. I think a musician knows better than to question the man who will be judging her performance. I think-“
My lips parted on a tremulous breath.
“-you didn’t believe me when I warned you I would spank your ass red if I ever caught you doing something so stupid again.”
There was no question about it; I was three seconds away from passing out.
He knew it and I knew it, his blue eyes locked to mine when he warned, “You should know that threat extends to you questioning me in class as well.”

***5 ‘Firebird’ Stars***
Once I started this book, I didn’t want to put it down.

Not that it was a surprise, I mean, Lily White writing dark/taboo romance (or anything really) is pretty much my cat nip, but this one. This one hit all the right buttons. It’s dark, smexy and edgy, but it’s also sweet, swoon worthy and heartbreaking as well and the twists and turns...all of that together just made for one hell of an emotional rollercoaster of ride that I didn’t want to get off of.

‘The Ending To My Song Had Been The Beginning Of The Music We Played Together’

Lennon and Amelia got their hooks into me from the very beginning and as their story progressed I fell more and more in love with both of them. Lennon presents himself as an accomplished pianist who enjoys the nicer things in life, but looks at fame in a blase sort of way ~ and in some respects that is true ~ but what lurks beneath the surface is something darker than most would ever guess. He has demons and a need to dominate that rides him hard on a daily basis. But even with the darkness in him, there is a truly compassionate and honorable heart that beats within. Amelia is a young woman with a bruised soul and heart. She is a melange of impetuous and cautious, determined and submissive and it made her absolutely fascinating to experience because her reactions and choices weren’t always ones I expected, but the repercussions of those always brought about a change in her that made her stronger.

The first time they collide is definitely NOT the definition of a ‘meet-cute’ but it does set the tone for the dark, chaotic, smexy yet crazily sweet and heartfelt journey Lennon and Amelia end up on. The mass majority of the time the angst between them is quite high, but through that and the music, the connection they have becomes stronger and that they themselves also start to grow and become more. There are a ton of road blocks in this one, and to be perfectly honest the whole mentor/student age gap issue is one of the minor ones, so nothing goes as one would think and that big, huge pile up of crazy was a twist I didn’t see coming ~ it was heartbreaking but at the same time it was the start of putting the broken pieces back together. And though I wouldn’t have minded a little more grovelling (It’s just a me thing) I loved where Lennon and Amelia ended up.

Addicting. Plain and simple this book, Lennon and Amelia and all the chaos surrounding them was simply addicting and those little, and big, twists just did it for me. And then there is the music. While I’m a music junkie, classical isn’t one that I dive into on a daily basis, but I do know some pieces as well a good number of the more popular composers and I did search them out and listen as I read and I have to say, they definitely help to set and elevate the tone of the story ~ especially the piece by Stravinsky ~ so total props to the author for the selection. As stated at the beginning, this is a dark read, so go into it knowing that there will be things that may be triggers for you. While much of the focus is on Lennon and Amelia, I really liked the supporting cast of characters ~ Dizzy was awesome and I wouldn’t mind it if we saw Ben again at some point in the future...just sayin’.
