***5 ‘The Exorcist Could Be Her Fucking Memoir’ Stars***
I feel like I’ve been emotionally rode hard and put wet and fuck me, if I don’t want more of it.
This book is gratuitous everything to the Nth degree and then some.
Hell, I can barely make sense of the crazy in my head (And will have to totally edit this review to make it Amazon friendly) and doing anything with a sense of order probably won’t happen...just a little warning.
The word ‘Depravity’ was the hook. I mean, I love a good enemies to lovers romance, but this baby went waaaayyyy above and beyond that. They say there is a thin line between love and hate and in Breakdown that line doesn’t exist...for anyone. Everyone in this book is an enemy and lover all in the same breath and it created such a toxic brew that in the end, it was the norm, not the exception.
There are no saints in this story, though to call any of them sinners is an understatement. These characters...ALL of them are flawed, barely likeable on a good day, unpredictable and I swear the blood that runs through their veins is an acidic black instead of red (or blue if we want to be technical) and though I may not have “Liked” them, I was, and am, absolutely fascinated by them all and want more.
As for Sophie and Atticus and their...journey. The angst was intense. The love, hate, confusion, anger and every other emotion there is out was intense. Their love and hate for each made every interaction convoluted, but no one could deny the chemistry they had and though my feelings for them separately fall on the extreme opposite ends of the spectrum, I cannot deny that their broken souls coming together makes perfect sense.
For a debut, the author definitely went there. No apologies given, balls to the wall depravity in its deepest and darkest form and I’m hooked. There is a lot going on. These characters, ALL of them, have issues and secrets and agendas that only make sense to them...and only a few of these things were dealt with in Breakdown, but promise to come to some sort of head as the series progresses as there is a suspense arc woven into the depravity that is Perversion Records and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. Now, if you’ve read any of my reviews ~ no matter the genre or subgenre ~ you know I LOVE well written secondary characters, and this one is filled to the brim with them. But the two I actually kinda sorta loved were Imogen and Gaia, trust me, when you meet them, you’ll get it even if one has you looking at me like I’m batshitcrazy (which I kinda am) and then there is Ezra...I personally cannot wait to get into his enigmatic head, and heart, and see what color his soul truly is.
